College Admissions Statistics:
- In 2008, greater than 3.3 million students graduated from high school in the United States, the highest ever. That number is not expected to decrease until 2015-16.
- 65% of high school graduates applied and enrolled in postsecondary education in 2008.
- More than 16 million students are enrolled in college, an all-time high.
- High school graduates and college enrollments are expected to increase until at least 2015-16.
- 78% of four-year colleges reported an increase in the number of applications over last year.
- Only 50% of colleges reported an increase in early decision applications vs. 63% the previous year
- Early decision applications comprised 5.8% of all applications received
- 81% of colleges reported an increase in early action applications vs. 70% the previous year
- Early action applications represent 36.4% of all applications received
College Admissions Research:
- Research indicates that parental involvement is crucial in any effort to improve achievement and increase access to postsecondary education.
- Only 53% of schools that require a written postsecondary plan require parents to review and acknowledge their children’s postsecondary plan.
- The average public school counselor spends only 25% of his or her time engaged in college counseling.
